How accurate is a height estimate from a photo?

Expect an error of a few centimeters (an inch or two) in a good photo with a reference object at the same distance, and much more without one. Camera angle, lens distortion, shoes, and posture all shift the result. For a number you need to rely on, measure against a wall with a tape.

Can it measure building or tree height?

It can give a rough estimate. Include a person, car, or door in the frame for scale. The farther the subject is from the reference, the less reliable the estimate.

Standard Reference Heights for Photo Estimates

A photo has no built-in scale. The estimate gets better when something of known height stands at the same distance from the camera as your subject. These are common US standard heights that work well as references.

Door, ceiling, counter, and table heights are common US building and furniture standards; older or custom homes vary. Basketball and tennis heights are regulation sizes.

How a Photo Height Estimate Works

The AI looks for objects whose real size is predictable (a door, a countertop, a standard brick, an adult face) and scales the subject against them. That is why the reference table above matters: a standard 80 inch door next to the subject turns a guess into a reasonable estimate.

Getting a Better Estimate of a Person's Height

Shoot from about waist height, straight on, with the person standing upright against a wall and their feet visible. Avoid wide-angle and selfie shots, which stretch whatever is near the edge of the frame. Shoes add 2 to 4 cm, so note whether they are on.

Buildings and Trees

For tall subjects, include a person or a car in the frame and keep it roughly the same distance from the camera as the base of the building or tree. Treat the result as a ballpark figure: perspective errors grow with height.
