Gold karat measures purity. 24K is pure gold (99.9%). 18K is 75% gold. 14K is 58.5% gold. 10K is 41.7% gold. The remaining percentage is alloy metals (copper, silver, zinc) that add strength but do not carry gold value. Higher karat = more pure gold = higher melt value per gram.
